If multiple universes do, in fact, exist.
The professor was giving a lecture at the Sydney Opera House in the form of a 3D hologram on Saturday, fielding questions from the audience via satellite while he was at Cambridge University.
While Hawking did touch on deep scientific subects, such as the future of humanity, one member of the audience asked what effect Malik’s departure from the boy band will have on humanity.
“What do you think is the cosmological effect of Zayn leaving One Direction and consequently breaking the hearts of millions of teenage girls across the world?” someone asked.
Showing a sense of humor about it, Hawking replied, “Finally, a question about something important,” according to The Guardian.
“My advice to any heartbroken young girl is to pay close attention to the study of theoretical physics. Because one day there may well be proof of multiple universes,” he said. “It would not be beyond the realms of possibility that somewhere outside of our own universe lies another different universe. And in that universe, Zayn is still in One Direction.”
Hawking added that it’s even possible taht one of those broken-hearted girls could even be “happily married” in “another possible universe.”
On a more serious note, the scientist says that he thinks humanity’s days are numbered on Earth and that finding another planet is key to our survival.
“We must also continue to go into space for the future of humanity. I don’t think we will survive another 1,000 years without escaping beyond our fragile planet,” he said.
